GENERAL TECHNICAL ISSUES ============================== Installing YOU DON'T KNOW JACK® 5th Dementia -------------------------------------------- Before installing YOU DON'T KNOW JACK® 5th Dementia, disable all anti-virus software and any TSRs on your computer. Consult your anti-virus software's documentation to disable these. If you interrupt the Installer application during the installation process, it may leave some files on your hard disk. Remove these files and run the installer again to restart the installation process. Windows Compatibility --------------------- YOU DON'T KNOW JACK can be played on a Pentium 200MHz-based PC running Windows 95, 98 or Windows 2000. If you see spurious dialogs giving you the option to play YOU DON'T KNOW JACK? during gameplay, quit the game, disable the Windows Autoplay feature, then restart YOU DON'T KNOW JACK® 5th Dementia. To disable Autoplay: - open the System Control Panel (Start Menu\Settings\Control Panel) - click on the Device Manager tab - click on the icon for CD-ROM drives - double-click on the CD-ROM drive itself - click the Settings tab - uncheck the box labeled "Auto Insert Notification" - click OK, then click OK again This is an unusually rare problem, but computer users with older CD-ROM drives may experience this problem. If you are using the Virtual Memory feature in Windows 95 or 98 and are running very low on free disk space, you may experience "Out of Memory" errors in YOU DON'T KNOW JACK. Check your Virtual Memory settings and free some hard disk space and then restart YOU DON'T KNOW JACK® 5th Dementia. If you run SHARE, please disable it before you try to uninstall YOU DON'T KNOW JACK® 5th Dementia. You can disable it by commenting out the SHARE line from you autoexec.bat file. You can re-enable SHARE as soon as YOU DON'T KNOW JACK® 5th Dementia has been removed from your PC. Performance ----------- If you experience sound or video performance problems with YOU DON'T KNOW JACK® 5th Dementia, please make sure that any MP3 players, Microsoft Office Toolbar, Norton Navigator Task Bar or any similar utility or application is not running when you run JACK. These utilities can negatively affect the performance of games like JACK. In addition, please make sure that you have the latest MS Direct-X compatible video and sound card drivers. Contact the manufacturer of your video or sound card for more information on the availability of driver updates. Updates can usually be downloaded for free from the World Wide Web. If you still experience sound stuttering, make sure that you have turned Hardware Acceleration to "non" in your sound card's properties. If you are experiencing slow network play, or are continually dropped from the game during network play, it may be due to a poor connection or heavy Internet traffic. Checking your modem connection speed and/or verifying that you can access the Web from a web browser at a decent speed can often make a diagnosis. If you are having general difficulties connecting to the Internet, please contact your Internet Service Provider for support. Currently Known Non-Networking Issues ------------------------------------- It is not recommended to remove the YOU DON'T KNOW JACK® 5th Dementia CD any time during gameplay. To exit JACK® while playing the game, hit the 'Esc' key then 'Q' for quit. If that doesn't work, hold the 'Alt' key and press 'Esc'. Currently Known Networking and Connection Issues ------------------------------------------------ YOU DON'T KNOW JACK® 5th Dementia may not be able to detect all ISPs, especially those with non-standard Windows Dial-Up Networking dialers (i.e. AOL, MSN, and most Free ISPs). To connect with these ISPs, please either connect manually (how you normally do) when promoted in the game, or connect manually before you begin the game. In addition, 5th Dementia is not compatible with most free ISPs. If you do decide to use JACK with a free ISP such as Net Zero, AltaVista, or Yahoo, the free ISP's software may interrupt your game. In addition to interruptions, you may be unexpectedly disconnected from the game. To use a free ISP with JACK, please connect manually before starting the game and play at YOUR OWN RISK! YOU DON'T KNOW JACK® 5th Dementia must have free and uninhibited access to the Internet once connected (via dialup, DSL, Cable or the like). This means most software firewalls, such as ZoneAlarm must give JACK permission to communicate with the servers via ping and various proprietary ports. III. GENERAL GAME ISSUES ============================== Hitting 'Esc' to bring up the Pause Screen will not pause gameplay in a Network game. The Pause Screen will pause the game for any Home game.
