preface

IT is not known when the Church of St. James Gorton, was founded, but we have the evidence of the Will of Ambrose Beswick that it existed in 1562. The Church is about three miles south- east of Manchester and stands a little north of the road leading from Manchester to Hyde.

It has been stated that the Registers commence in 1570, but no trace of any Register earher than 1599 can now be discovered.

The two Registers which constitute the present Volume are as follows : —

Volume I. — Bound in sheepskin — contains 59 leaves of parchment each measuring 11 inches by 7 inches.

Volume II. — Leather-bound — contains 58 leaves of parchment, each measuring 11 inches by 7 inches ; two paper fly-leaves at the beginning of the Volume and one paper fly-leaf at the end.

It is hoped the chronological key may assist in straightening out the confused arrangement of years in the earlier Volume, and the original scribe is responsible for the vagaries of spelling.
